"Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki said Tuesday that Iraqi forces had recently arrested a leader of the Sunni insurgency who had been in league with members of Saddam Hussein’s ousted Baath Party." and that “This terrorist had deep ties with the former regime and created with its followers a devil’s pact reflected in bloody scenes of carnage involving innocent children and women and the elderly,”

The book, 'The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent' analyzes the history of Latin America arguing against European and later U.S. economic exploitation and political influence over the region.
Chavez said this about meeting Obama (for the very first time), "I think it was a good moment, I think President Obama is an intelligent man, compared to the previous U.S. presidents."

Obama mentioned at his first meeting with South American leaders that "I have a lot to learn."

In an opening speech to the 34-nation gathering on Friday, Obama promised a new agenda for the Americas, as well as a new style. (Socialism, thats for sure) Saying "We have at times been disengaged, and at times we sought to dictate our terms," (Blame America first, has always been your style Obama) Obama said to loud applause. "But I pledge to you that we seek an equal partnership. There is no senior partner and junior partner in our relations." Giving Chavez the impression that he and his country are equal to that of the US.

Obama also extended a hand to a leader Ronald Reagan spent years trying to drive from power: Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega and gives Obama a free pass by delivering a blistering 50-minute speech that denounced capitalism and U.S. imperialism as the root of much hemispheric mischief. The address even recalled the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, though Ortega said the new U.S. president could not be held to account for that.

But did Obama defend the US? NO!!! His comment on what Ortega said was ""I'm grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened"

Obama final words "I came here to deal with the future"

And what's that? A Socialism partnership with the likes of Chavez, Castro & Ortega?

Mack demanded that Lenin(aka:Obama) should fire UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and in his words “If President Obama is willing to fire the CEO of General Motors because of his failures, then he should be even-handed in demanding Ron Gettelfinger’s resignation for his equally egregious failures,” And that Gettelfinger had called strikes which had hurt the industry and refused concessions to improve the finances of Detroit’s automakers.
So what is good for the Goose, Lenin(aka:Obama), IS good for the Gander.

Obama has told GM that as part of the conditions for help from the Federal Government that Rick Wagoner must step down as part of the governments plan. So Rick bows out in the interest of saving GM. 24 hours later Obama pulls a fast one, gives GM 60 days to come up with a different plan, even if its bankruptcy and asserted unprecedented government control over the auto industry. This is your PLAN? Obama then bluntly rejecting turnaround plans by General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, demanding fresh concessions for long-term federal aid. Odd thing was the deadline for long term aid was suppose to be announced today, after Wagoner was out. Also Obama said today "I'm committed to working with Congress and the auto companies to meet one goal, building the next generation of clean cars." In HIS opinion 'our auto industry is not moving in the right direction'. Meaning HIS and the Democrats direction. Even Obama supporters in the Union are upset. One worker ... of Chesterfield Township in Michigan, said automakers were being punished because of public anger over the banking bailout. "They're using us for the mistakes they've made in Washington," he said. Other workers alleged a double standard in how Washington dealt with Wagoner, as opposed to CEOs of bailed-out banks. "They're using him as a fall guy," said F. Rowser, financial secretary for UAW Local 909. On top of that the Dow tumbles on fears about the government actions today sent stocks plummeting, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing about 254 points. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) looks like he may be facing a fresh political firestorm.

Dodd just admitted on CNN that he inserted a loophole in the stimulus legislation that allowed million-dollar bonuses to insurance giant AIG to go forward – after previously denying any involvement in writing the controversial provision. .

“We wrote the language in the bill, the deal with bonuses, golden parachutes, excessive executive compensation that was adopted unanimously by the United States Senate in the stimulus bill,” Dodd told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer this afternoon.

“But for that language, there would have been no language to deal with this at all.”

Dodd had previously said that he played no role in writing the controversial language, and was not a part of the conference committee that inserted the language in the bill. As late as today, Dodd’s spokeswoman denied the senator’s involvement.

The AIG bonuses have caused a political firestorm, with Republicans and Democrats alike looking to lay blame for who’s responsible, and leading lawmakers looking to revoke the bonuses.

Dodd’s role in the legislation will likely come up as he faces the likelihood of a tough re-election. Former GOP congressman Rob Simmons announced he was running this week, and has already taken issue with Dodd’s stewardship as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

Barack Obama wants to cut the federal deficit in half by the end of his first term, mostly by scaling back Iraq war spending, raising taxes on the wealthiest (this is where your 13 bucks a week will come from) and streamlining government, an administration official said Saturday.

Here is where he needs to retake his math101.

Obama's proposal for the 2010 fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 projects that the estimated $1.3 trillion deficit he has inherited from former President George W. Bush (which of course the Dem controlled House & Senate approved) will be halved to $533 billion by 2013.

HMMMMMM half of 1.3 trillion is $650 Billion. not $533 billion. He is off by $117 billion, for Christ sakes.

1 month in to his Presidency and the guy doesn't know simple math?!?!

He said his budget will be "sober in its assessments, honest in its accounting, (HA HA HA, they can't do the math and he is saying honesty in its accounting) and lays out in detail my strategy for investing in what we need, cutting what we don't, and restoring fiscal discipline."

Which even her friends who live in her backyard, the Japanese Automakers, say are un-realistic goals.
The letters cosigned by Barney Frank, D-Mass., the California Democrat said the automakers should also commit to protecting and sustaining the health and pension benefits of workers and an additional assurance that taxpayers benefit as corporate conditions improve and shareholder value increases. Now one of the main reasons the US Auto companies are in this mess is the ridicules benefits they are paying to their former line workers now. Their FULL pay that they made before retiring. But of course the management of these companies will have to cut their benefits. Watch and see.

Pelosi and Frank have become spokespersons for the Obama administration as GM and Chrysler are set to submit their plans for restructuring their businesses to the Obama administration as part of the $17.4 billion in government loans. Both were ordered to make steep cuts in debt and rework agreements with the UAW. But they have to keep their workforce benefits in tacked?
The letter from Pelosi and Frank to GM Chairman Rick Wagoner and Chrysler Chairman Robert Nardelli asks the automakers for “a demonstration of your ability to meet or exceed federal fuel economy requirements and the emissions standards adopted by California and other states.” The thing is, THEY have NOT adopted ANYTHING yet. Also, did this type of letter of ‘emission standards’ go out to Japanese Automakers? My guess would be NO. California and 17 other states WANT to set limits on greenhouse-gas emissions from vehicles. But to date they have not.
Funny, when you write to Pelosi, her office replies back to contact “Your representative on this and other matters of concern” But it’s OK for other constituent representatives (Pelosi and Frank) to dictate to others outside their district?

A U.S. counterterror official confirmed Friday that Said Ali al-Shihri, who was jailed at Guantanamo for six years after his capture in Pakistan, has resurfaced as a leader of a Yemeni branch of al-Qaida.

"By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for," al-Shihri said in a video posted on a militant-leaning Web site Friday. It was the second time this week a reference to al-Shihri has shown up on the Web site. He was mentioned in an online magazine on Jan. 19 with a reference to his prisoner number at Guantanamo, 372.

Al-Shihri was released by the U.S. in 2007 to the Saudi government for rehabilitation. But this week a publication posted on the site said he is now the top deputy in "al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula," a Yemeni offshoot of the terror group headed by Osama bin Laden. WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama began overhauling U.S. treatment of terror suspects Thursday, signing orders to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, shut down secret overseas CIA prisons, review military war crimes trials and ban the harshest interrogation methods.
With his action, Obama started changing how the United States prosecutes and questions al-Qaida, Taliban or other foreign fighters who pose a threat to Americans — and overhauling America's image abroad, battered by accusations of the use of torture and the indefinite detention of suspects at the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.
"The message that we are sending the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly and we are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals," the president said.
The centerpiece order would close the much-maligned Guantanamo facility within a year, a complicated process with many unanswered questions that was nonetheless a key campaign promise of Obama's. The administration already has suspended trials for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo for 120 days pending a review of the military tribunals.

OK, what is wrong here?

Is it because Obama wants to make his image of what this country should be more appealing to the rest of the world? Well the rest of the world wasn’t viscously attacked on 9/11, America was.

Is it about torture? Then why close down Gitmo and the CIA prisons? Just sign an executive order that these places go by the Military Book of extracting information.

Why suspend trials? Isn’t this what the left had wanted, to not hold them indefinitely, but to proceed with their trials?

A Pentagon report released a few weeks ago has clearly stated that 61% of the captured Al Qaeda detainees that have been released from Gitmo have returned to terrorist activity.
Did Obama not get this report? Or is he ignoring it?

Obama is jumping right in to the waters before testing whether it’s hot or fridged cold. It’s a knee jerk reaction from pressure of the American liberal nutcases. Without review. Without vetting. Without a PLAN on what to do with these terrorist.

People, we have a serious problem with a rookie senator / President who is clearly green behind the ears.

Another person, another politician, another President

As I write this, yet another president is sworn in to office in this nations Capital.

Barack Hussein Obama has become this nations 44th president.

Over the course of the past 2 months there has been much hype about this day. Moderate hype at the very least.

But in the last few days the hype has become deafening. A frenzy, particularly in the press and left wing nutcase blogs.

I have read hundreds of articles from LA to NY. Chicago to Miami and from Washington to San Antonio.

And every article about the inauguration of Obama has all been the same.

And that is, ‘How historic this is’.

And as I read all those articles, I asked myself, ‘What is so historic about just another inauguration of an elected President? It has happened 43 times before.’

Then I read on.

And in every last story all, all mind you, have one thing in commend. At the outset of the articles one thing stands out as clear as a bell. “First African/American President” or “First Black President”

And then I thought back during the campaign and how the liberal left in this country began its cry that ‘If you don’t vote for Obama, you’re a racist.” Labeling voters and trying to guilt them in to voting for Obama.

Now we have the gushing swarm of the left and the media puking up “Our first African/American president.” as the first paragraph that is hammered out on to their screens about this day and Obama.

Is this the reason most in this nation are so hyped about this day and fawning over him as President? Because he is BLACK? Appears so!

What ever happened to the political correctness of NOT looking at the color of ones skin, but the content of ones caricature?

This whole hype leading up to this day has shown that “America” has yet to change in its racially ignorant attitude and has yet to look be on the color of someones skin.

He’s just another person, another politician, another President.

OK so now Carl Levin, the most worthless Senator in congress next to Harry 'Ass' Reid, is trying to make up for the lack of oversight with regards to the $700B bailout of the banking and Wallstreet big boys. The failure of Congress to put some sort of stipulation on HOW the banks were going to use the money was a HUGE after thought. But of course the Democrats did manage to stipulate one thing. That the CEO's of these banks and such take a huge paycut. Doesn't surprise me one bit.
And congress now has egg on their face because the financial institutions are saying they have no way of tracking what actually happens to the money. (yeah, BS)
Their way of just telling the Federal Government 'Thanks for lining our pockets with cash... wait, you want us to do WHAT with it?? HA!!!'
But NOW the folks to our 'left' (who control and will control Congress for the next 2years, at least) are pointing the finger at, you guessed it, President Bush for HIS lack of "accountability" on this whole thing. For god sakes.
Passing the buck, one last time before the liberals 'messiah takes the reins of the country.
These liberal "congressmen (and women)" are like children. Can't take ANY responsibility for THEIR lack of accountability on a bailout which THEY approved.-LNN

BLOOMBERG NEWS - U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of an investigative panel, said Sunday that he'll issue a subpoena to the U.S. Treasury Department to obtain a contract with Citigroup Inc. for the $25 billion the bank received from a federal bailout program.
The Treasury Department has provided only a form that it requires recipients to fill out without turning over the contract, Levin, a Michigan Democrat, told reporters at the Capitol. Citigroup got the funding under the Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program in October.
"I'm going to subpoena a document which should not have to be subpoenaed," said Levin, chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. "I want to see whether the actual contract with Citibank is the same as the form."
The demand, which Levin said he'll issue to the department this week before its leadership turns over to President-elect Barack Obama's team, reflects the anger of Democrats who say the Bush administration botched accountability for the $700-billion financial rescue program. Lawmakers are demanding stricter terms before considering releasing the second half of the funding.
"I want to see what commitments were made before we vote on another $350 billion," Levin said before Democrats met behind closed doors with Obama advisers on an economic stimulus package.
Levin questioned whether financial institutions had to submit to terms as strict as were laid out for automakers that received part of the rescue funding. He said he wants to see whether they had to meet conditions such as revising mortgages so that homeowners facing possible foreclosure could stay in their homes.
Treasury officials weren't immediately available to comment.

Turns out the liberal nutcases in America are angry with their "Change the nation" leader.
Even though P.E. Obama did say he would unite the country, the liberal left thought this would be by totally injecting socialist values across the board.-LNN

Liberals are growing increasingly nervous – and some just flat-out angry – that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.
Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.
Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss.
(That’s Washington folks…you never learn-LNN)
"He has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right cabinet. But we do hope that before it's all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment," said Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America.
OpenLeft blogger Chris Bowers went so far as to issue this plaintive plea: "Isn't there ever a point when we can get an actual Democratic administration?"
(Guess what, he is acting like a true Democrat, not a socialist lunatic, as with the likes of Bowers and Carpenter.-LNN)
Even supporters make clear they’re on the lookout for backsliding. "There’s a concern that he keep his basic promises and people are going to watch him," said Roger Hickey, a co-founder of Campaign for America’s Future.
Obama insists he hasn’t abandoned the goals that made him feel to some like a liberal savior. But the left’s bill of particulars against Obama is long, and growing.
Obama drew rousing applause at campaign events when he vowed to tax the windfall profits of oil companies. As president-elect, Obama says he won’t enact the tax. (Smart move, that raises fuel prices-LNN)
Obama’s pledge to repeal the Bush tax cuts and redistribute that money to the middle class made him a hero among Democrats (SOCIALIST Dems, there IS a difference-LNN) who said the cuts favored the wealthy. But now he’s struck a more cautious stance on rolling back tax cuts for people making over $250,000 a year, signaling he’ll merely let them expire as scheduled at the end of 2010.
Obama’s post-election rhetoric on Iraq and choices for national security team have some liberal Democrats even more perplexed. As a candidate, Obama defined and separated himself from his challengers by highlighting his opposition to the war in Iraq from the start. He promised to begin to end the war on his first day in office.
Now Obama’s says that on his first day in office he will begin to "design a plan for a responsible drawdown," as he told NBC’s "Meet the Press" Sunday. Obama has also filled his national security positions with supporters of the Iraq war: Sen. Hillary Clinton, who voted to authorize force in Iraq, as his secretary of state; and President George W. Bush’s defense secretary, Robert Gates, continuing in the same role.
(Another smart move that the liberal nutcases still to this day don’t get why we won’t cut and run-LNN)
The central premise of the left’s criticism is direct – don’t bite the hand that feeds, Mr. President-elect. The Internet that helped him so much during the election is lighting up with irritation and critiques.
Now it’s Obama’s Cabinet moves that are drawing the most fire. It’s not just that he’s picked Clinton and Gates. It’s that liberal Democrats say they’re hard-pressed to find one of their own on Obama’s team so far – particularly on the economic side, where people like Tim Geithner and Lawrence Summers are hardly viewed as pro-labor. (Can we say the Big 3 money needs are half the problem, with THEIR LABOR costs?-LNN)
That’s a view that seems to have kept some progressive leaders holding their fire. There are signs of a struggle within the left wing of the Democratic Party about whether it’s just too soon to criticize Obama -- and if there’s really anything to complain about just yet.
Case in point: One of the Campaign for America’s Future blogs commented on Obama’s decision not to tax oil companies’ windfall profits saying, "Between this move and the move to wait to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, it seems like the Obama team is buying into the right-wing frame that raising any taxes - even those on the richest citizens and wealthiest corporations - is bad for the economy."

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that Congress is unlikely to approve a tax rebate before President Bush leaves office, and she signaled that prospects are dim for a postelection session to pass an economic aid package.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Pelosi played down the chances that Democrats — increasingly confident of capturing the White House and building their House and Senate majorities substantially — could come to terms with Bush and vanquished congressional Republicans this fall on a plan to address Americans' pocketbook woes.
Democrats have already called for a $61 billion package of jobless aid and spending, and are looking at adding to it as the financial meltdown exacerbates the economic crisis.
"What we're doing is preparing," Pelosi, D-Calif., said in an interview in her Capitol office. "We'll come in if we have a purpose... if there's something to pass that (Bush would) sign."

This is the congress, since taking over both houses, that are holding off until they take the hole ball of wax!! Note (from the nutcase speaker of the house) "We'll come in if we have a purpose"

Today, we have this.

AP-WASHINGTON - President Bush has been a "total failure" in everything from the economy to the war to energy policy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. In an interview on CNN, the California Democrat was asked to respond to video of the president criticizing the Democratic-led Congress for heading into the final 26 days of the legislative session without having passed a single government spending bill.
Pelosi shot back in unusually personal terms.
"You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for "challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again."
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino defended Bush.
"What the president said is a fact — this is the longest a Congress has gone in 20 years without passing a single spending bill, so it's clear that the speaker is feeling some frustration at their inability to do so."
Pelosi's outburst was a departure. Her usual practice in public has been to call Bush's policies a failure — not his presidency or him, personally. Pelosi's remarks are the latest evidence of the Democrats' throw-caution-to-the-wind approach to Bush in the waning days of a presidency weighed down by an unpopular war and soaring gasoline prices.
Election Day, after all, is just over four months away; Bush's successor takes his seat on Jan. 20.
Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid, long ago took off the rhetorical gloves. Last month, he ridiculed Republicans who sided with Bush on a Medicare bill.

AP- WASHINGTON - President Bush on Saturday tried to pin the blame on Congress for soaring energy prices and said lawmakers need to lift long-standing restrictions on drilling for oil in pristine lands and offshore tracts believed to hold huge reserves of fuel.
"It's time for members of Congress to address the pain that high gas prices are causing our citizens," the president said. "Every extra dollar that American families spend because of high gas prices is one less dollar they can use to put food on the table or send a child to college. The American people deserve better."
With gasoline prices above $4 a gallon, Bush and his Republican allies think Americans are less reluctant to allow drilling offshore (THINK? Does the poll stated below NOT SHOW THIS- LNN) and in an Alaska wildlife refuge that environmentalists have fought successfully for decades to protect. Over half the people surveyed by the Pew Research Center in late June said they now consider energy exploration and drilling more important than conservation, compared with a little over a third who felt that way only five months ago. The sharpest shift in attitude came among political liberals.
Democrats say they are for drilling, but argue that oil companies aren't going after the oil where they already have leases. So why open new, protected areas? they ask. Democrats say there are 68 million acres of federal land and waters where oil and gas companies hold leases, but aren't producing oil.

"Americans are fed up every time they go to fill up and they're right to demand action. But instead of a serious response, President Bush and his allies simply repeat the same old line more drilling," Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said in the Democrats' radio address.
"Democrats support more drilling," he said. "In fact, what the president hasn't told you is that the oil companies are already sitting on 68 million acres of federal lands with the potential to nearly double U.S. oil production. That is why in the coming days congressional Democrats will vote on 'Use It or Lose It' legislation requiring the big oil companies to develop these resources or lose their leases to someone else who will."

"But we know that drilling by itself will not solve the problem of high gas prices," Van Hollen said. "We cannot drill our way to energy independence."

He cited Democrats' calls to tap the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve, because it is full and "America's rainy day is now." And he said the country must focus on new energy policies that focus on alternatives to oil.
Bush said that Democrats are at fault and that "Americans are increasingly frustrated with Congress' failure to take action.
"One of the factors driving up high gas prices is that many of our oil deposits here in the United States have been put off-limits for exploration and production. Past efforts to meet the demand for oil by expanding domestic resources have been repeatedly rejected by Democrats in Congress."
Bush repeated his call for Congress to lift the restrictions, including a ban on offshore drilling. A succession of presidents from George H.W. Bush to Bill Clinton to the current president have sided against drilling in these waters as has Congress each year for 27 years, seeking to protect beaches and coastal states' tourism economies.

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program (What, thought there was nothing found-LNN)— a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans
The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.
What's now left is the final and complicated push to clean up the remaining radioactive debris at the former Tuwaitha nuclear complex about 12 miles south of Baghdad — using teams that include Iraqi experts recently trained in the Chernobyl fallout zone in Ukraine.
"Everyone is very happy to have this safely out of Iraq," said a senior U.S. official who outlined the nearly three-month operation to The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.
While yellowcake alone is not considered potent enough for a so-called "dirty bomb" — a conventional explosive that disperses radioactive material — it could stir widespread panic if incorporated in a blast. Yellowcake also can be enriched for use in reactors and, at higher levels, nuclear weapons using sophisticated equipment.
The Iraqi government sold the yellowcake to a Canadian uranium producer, Cameco Corp., in a transaction the official described as worth "tens of millions of dollars." A Cameco spokesman, Lyle Krahn, declined to discuss the price, but said the yellowcake will be processed at facilities in Ontario for use in energy-producing reactors.
"We are pleased ... that we have taken (the yellowcake) from a volatile region into a stable area to produce clean electricity," he said.
The deal culminated more than a year of intense diplomatic and military initiatives — kept hushed in fear of ambushes or attacks once the convoys were under way: first carrying 3,500 barrels by road to Baghdad, then on 37 military flights to the Indian Ocean atoll of Diego Garcia and finally aboard a U.S.-flagged ship for a 8,500-mile trip to Montreal.
And, in a symbolic way, the mission linked the current attempts to stabilize Iraq with some of the high-profile claims about Saddam's weapons capabilities in the buildup to the 2003 invasion.
Accusations that Saddam had tried to purchase more (MORE??? Of course the AP changes the story-LNN).. yellowcake from the African nation of Niger — and an article by a former U.S. ambassador refuting the claims — led to a wide-ranging probe into Washington leaks that reached high into the Bush administration.
Tuwaitha and an adjacent research facility were well known for decades as the centerpiece of Saddam's nuclear efforts.
U.S. and Iraqi forces have guarded the 23,000-acre site — surrounded by huge sand berms — following a wave of looting after Saddam's fall that included villagers toting away yellowcake storage barrels for use as drinking water cisterns.
U.S.-led crews began removing the yellowcake from the Saddam-era containers — some leaking or weakened by corrosion — and reloading the material into about 3,500 secure barrels.
In April, truck convoys started moving the yellowcake from Tuwaitha to Baghdad's international airport, the official said. Then, for two weeks in May, it was ferried in 37 flights to Diego Garcia, a speck of British territory in the Indian Ocean where the U.S. military maintains a base.
On June 3, an American ship left the island for Montreal, said the official, who declined to give further details about the operation.
The yellowcake wasn't the only dangerous item removed from Tuwaitha.
Earlier this year, the military withdrew four devices for controlled radiation exposure from the former nuclear complex. The lead-enclosed irradiation units, used to decontaminate food and other items, contain elements of high radioactivity that could potentially be used in a weapon, according to the official. Their Ottawa-based manufacturer, MDS Nordion, took them back for free, the official said.
The yellowcake was the last major stockpile from Saddam's nuclear efforts, but years of final cleanup is ahead for Tuwaitha and other smaller sites.
The U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency plans to offer technical expertise.
Last month, a team of Iraqi nuclear experts completed training in the Ukrainian ghost town of Pripyat, which once housed the Chernobyl workers before the deadly meltdown in 1986, said an IAEA official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decontamination plan has not yet been publicly announced.

WASHINGTON - Saddam Hussein's intelligence agency secretly financed a trip to Iraq for three U.S. lawmakers during the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion, federal prosecutors said Wednesday
An indictment unsealed in Detroit accuses Muthanna Al-Hanooti, a member of a Michigan nonprofit group, of arranging for three members of Congress to travel to Iraq in October 2002 at the behest of Saddam's regime. Prosecutors say Iraqi intelligence officials paid for the trip through an intermediary.
At the time, the Bush administration was trying to persuade Congress to authorize military action against Iraq.
The trip by Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, David Bonior of Michigan and Mike Thompson of California.

None was charged and Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said investigators "have no information whatsoever" any of them knew the trip was underwritten by Saddam.

"Obviously we didn't know it at the time," McDermott spokesman Michael DeCesare said Wednesday. "The trip was to see the plight of the Iraqi children. That's the only reason we went."
During the trip, the lawmakers expressed skepticism about the Bush administration's claims that Saddam was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.
"War is not the answer," Bonior, who is no longer in Congress, said at a news conference while on the trip. "There is a way to resolve this."
Though weapons of mass destruction ultimately were never found, the lawmakers drew criticism for their trip at the time.
Oklahoma Sen. Don Nickles, the second-ranking Senate Republican at the time, said the Democrats "sound somewhat like spokespersons for the Iraqi government."
Al-Hanooti was arrested Tuesday night while returning to the U.S. from the Middle East, where he was looking for a job, his attorney, James Thomas, said. Al-Hanooti pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, illegally purchasing Iraqi oil and lying to authorities. He was being held on $100,000 bail.
Thomas said Al-Hanooti would "vigorously defend" himself against the charges but he could not discuss the specifics of the case since he had seen none of the evidence.
Al-Hanooti worked on and off from 1999 to 2006 as a public relations coordinator for Life for Relief and Development, a Michigan group formed after the first Gulf War to fund humanitarian work in Iraq. FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force agents raided the charity's headquarters in 2006 but charged nobody and allowed the agency to continue operating.
Prosecutors said Al-Hanooti was responsible for monitoring Congress for the Iraqi Intelligence Service. From 1999 to 2002, he allegedly provided Saddam's government with a list of U.S. lawmakers he believed favored lifting economic sanctions against Iraq.
In exchange for coordinating the congressional trip, Al-Hanooti allegedly received 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil, prosecutors said.
DeCesare said McDermott was invited to go to Iraq by a Seattle church group and was unaware of any other funding for the trip.

WASHINGTON - House Democrats are planning another veto showdown with President Bush on the Iraq war. And this time, they say they won't back down. (Yeah, will see!)

The House planned to vote as early as next week on a $50 billion war spending bill that would require Bush to begin withdrawing troops. The measure identifies a goal of ending combat by December 2008, leaving only enough soldiers and Marines behind to fight terrorists (That’s what 160K of them are doing NOW. If you want to see more GI’s dead, then this is YOUR plan), train Iraqi security forces and protect U.S. assets.
In a private caucus meeting on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told rank-and-file Democrats the bill was their best shot at challenging Bush on the war. And if Bush rejected it, she said, she did not intend on sending him another war spending bill for the rest of the year. (How about the rest of your stay in congress?)

"It's a war without end," Pelosi, D-Calif., later told reporters. "There is no light at the end of the tunnel. We must reverse it." (The surge is working, there is light at the end of the tunnel, we are succeeding and you want to REVERSE IT?)

The bill is similar to one rejected by Bush in May. Unable to muster the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto, Democrats stripped the timetable from the bill and approved a $95 billion emergency spending bill, mostly for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The measure established political goals for the Iraqi government and put conditions on reconstruction aid, but Bush ultimately retained authority over the money, which ran out this fall.
White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Thursday that Bush would again veto any legislation that sets an "artificial timeline" for troop withdrawals.
"We should be supporting our troops as they are succeeding, not finding ways to undercut their mission," he said.
Several anti-war liberals (which are all of them) said Thursday they were willing to give Bush more money for the war, as long as it came with strings attached.
"The American people want out," Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said. (Only with a victory, dolt) "And we have to make sure we take giant steps in that direction."
But others said they were concerned the bill was too soft. After meeting with these members, Pelosi decided to put off debate until next week as she negotiated the details.
If approved by the House, the Senate also might take up the measure next week.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he did not want to approve a spending measure for Iraq unless it forced a change in Bush's policies (Why, we are succeeding, WHY CHANGE, DOLT?)
When asked whether that was possible, considering the thin majority Democrats hold in the Senate, Reid said it "is up to the White House and up to the Republicans." (OK so it didn’t work last time, it won’t work again, WHY then are you fleecing American tax dollars?)
Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Democrats face "unfortunate timing" because of the military progress being made in Iraq.
"While our troops are quelling violence and defeating terrorists in Baghdad and throughout Iraq, Democrats in Washington are trying to choke off funds for our troops in the field," he said.

AP- Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday rejected charges she's being secretive about her role as first lady in trying to overhaul the nation's health care system.
"There's been some misunderstanding and some misrepresentation about what the facts are," said Clinton, the front-runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
Reporters asked Clinton about a series of charges that have been made about her since last Tuesday's Democratic debate. She shrugged off the attacks.
"I don't think they piled onto me the other night because I'm a woman, I think they piled on to me because I'm winning," said Clinton. "That's what happens."

The New York senator accepted the endorsement of former Vice President Walter "Fritz" Mondale, who won the party's presidential nomination in 1984.

Mondale recalled the attacks he took from rivals in the primary season. "People know the only chance they have is to tear you down," he said.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have been accused of withholding documents from the period when, as first lady, she worked on health care reform.
"The National Archive controls and administers presidential records, that's what they do for every president," she said.
"My husband has not withheld a single document," said Clinton. "We have hundreds of requests that are being dealt with and are being processed as quickly as the archives can."
Clinton was also asked Gen. Pervez Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan this weekend. Clinton said the crisis was caused in part by a "fundamentally incoherent" U.S. policy.

Republicans quickly seized on Mondale's support of Clinton, coupling it with an earlier endorsement from 1972 presidential candidate George McGovern. Calling the former candidates "landslide losers," the Republican National Committee pointed out that Mondale won only 13 electoral votes in 1984, while McGovern scored just 17 in 1972.
"Hillary Clinton's endorsement from yet another failed Democratic presidential candidate underscores concerns the American people have with her candidacy," said RNC spokesman Danny Diaz.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin says he saw “credible and positive results” from the surge of troops in Iraq ordered by President George W. Bush but remains skeptical about whether military successes will lead to political resolutions in that war-torn country.
Levin, a Detroit Democrat who spent two days in Iraq with Virginia Sen. John Warner, said visits to bases in Mosul and Baghdad showed that the military aspects of the surge policy have shown progress in reducing violence and giving political leaders time to reconcile between divergent factions.
"We are also encouraged by continuing positive results – in al Anbar Province, from the recent decisions of some of the Sunni tribes to turn against al Qaeda and cooperate with coalition forces to kill or capture its adherents enemy,” Levin and Warner said today in a joint statement. “We remain concerned, however, that in the absence of overall ‘national’ political reconciliation, we may be inadvertently helping to create another militia which will have to be dealt with in the future.”

The two – who were expected to brief reporters this afternoon in a teleconference from Jordan – said that even though the surge is having measurable results, “we are not optimistic about the prospects” of political compromises. Levin has been a proponent of a calculated withdraw of American troops to force the Iraqi factions to deal with each other.

“In all of our meetings we witnessed a great deal of apprehension regarding the capabilities of the current Iraqi government to shed its sectarian biases and act in a unifying manner,” the statement said.

Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who has called homeownership "the foundation of the American dream," said Friday he will divest his holdings in funds linked to lenders that have foreclosed on Hurricane Katrina victims.
I will not have my family's money involved in these firms that are foreclosing on people in New Orleans," he told the Associated Press.
Edwards has reported $29.5 million in assets, millions of which are invested in the hedge fund Fortress Investment Group., a company that paid him nearly half a million dollars last year for consulting advice.
Fortress has investments in lenders that offer subprime mortgages, higher priced loans for borrowers considered greater risks. The Wall Street Journal on Friday identified 34 New Orleans homeowners who face foreclosure actions from lenders connected to Fortress.
"My reaction is I'm going to help these people," (You mean help them out of their money, right?-LNN) Edwards said in a telephone interview.
"I just learned about this. (BS-LNN) I don't know the details, (after 2 years???-LNN) I will find out and I will find a way to help them." (Lets keep this in the front headlines and see if this REALLY happens…But THAT won’t happen-LNN)
Edwards has decried the predatory lending practices that sometimes accompany subprime mortgage lending, which especially target minorities and the elderly, and can tie people to home loans that they can't repay. He has built his campaign on an anti-poverty message and has toured and worked in the neighborhoods devastated by the 2005 hurricane.(Just to see if he and his wife could get a return on their investment-LNN) In fact, a three-day poverty tour he embarked on last month began in New Orleans' hardest hit Lower Ninth Ward.
Edwards worked part-time for Fortress Investment Group, getting paid $479,512. He and his wife also had $2.7 million to $8.5 million invested in a Fortress subsidiaries, according to ranges listed in his personal financial report. And Fortress executives have donated generously to his presidential campaign — company employees have donated more than $150,000 toward his candidacy during the first six months of the year.
Asked Friday if his investments damaged his image as a poverty fighter, Edward's said: "No. Everyone knows I am completely committed to eliminating poverty in this country. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Security men for Gaza's Hamas rulers clubbed and slammed rifle butts into opponents staging a rare protest Monday, seizing the cameras of journalists covering the event and raiding media offices to prevent news footage from getting out.
The Islamic militant group claims it is willing to tolerate dissent, but the crackdown was the latest in a series of moves to squash opposing voices, including breaking up private parties Friday and Monday where people were singing songs of the rival Fatah movement.
After Hamas gunmen in the Gaza Strip routed forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah in five days of fighting in June, the group declared an amnesty for former Fatah fighters.
Yet when Fatah and allied groups announced plans for Monday's rally, Hamas banned "all demonstrations and public gatherings" that do not have official permission.
Buses carrying protesters were halted by Hamas guards who beat passengers, driving them away and confiscating Fatah flags. However, about 300 people got past the militia cordon and demonstrated for 20 minutes, shouting "We want freedom. We want to raise our voice!"
Security officers arrested several demonstrators and then confiscated equipment from news photographers and cameramen trying to cover the arrests, including an Associated Press still camera.
Hamas squads also raided the Gaza offices of media organizations, looking for material from the rally. Staffers at satellite broadcaster Al-Arabiyya said the militiamen seized a camera and videotape at their office.
The Palestinian journalists union urged its members to observe a three-day boycott of any events organized by the Hamas militia, known as the Executive Force, to protest its treatment of the media.
Saleh Nasser, a member of the small, leftist Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine who was at the rally, condemned Hamas' actions.
"Treating people in this way when they came to raise their voice in a peaceful demonstration is something that is condemned, rejected and cannot be accepted," he said. "We are astonished by the decision to ban demonstrations."
The Gaza fighting in June, during which about 100 people were killed and 500 wounded, deepened the already bitter political rivalry between Hamas and Fatah.
Following the Hamas takeover of Gaza, Abbas expelled Hamas from the Palestinian coalition government and formed a West Bank-based administration of moderates in its place.
Undeterred, deposed Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh pledged to impose law and order in the formerly anarchic Gaza Strip. But his Executive Force is gaining a reputation for heavy-handedness, particularly when dealing with Fatah supporters.
On Friday, rifle-toting militiamen roared up to a bachelor party where revelers were dancing to Fatah songs. Video showed the Hamas men firing in the air to break up the celebration, clubbing guests, hurling chairs around and leaving one man lying unconscious.
The images were repeatedly broadcast on Fatah-affiliated Palestine TV. The cameraman who took the footage, from the local Gaza Ramattan news agency, was detained and questioned by Hamas for several hours.
On Monday, the Executive Force was in action again, breaking up the wedding of a Fatah activist and holing five guests for several hours.
One of those detained, Zaid Salem, said wedding participants were singing Fatah songs but did not break a Hamas ban on celebratory gunfire and were not charged with any wrongdoing.
"We were celebrating the wedding and we were astonished by this act," he said. "We were released, but we have no explanation for what happened."
Hamas did not comment directly on Monday's incidents.
But in a statement, it said the Executive Force is a nonpartisan enforcer of public order regulations, which require that demonstrations be authorized 48 hours in advance and that social events be low key — without shooting, fireworks, excessive noise or disruption of public streets.
"Anyone violating these orders will be subject to punishment," the statement said. "Nobody is above the law."

DUBLIN, Ireland - Former President Jimmy Carter accused the U.S.,Israel and the European Union on Tuesday of seeking to divide the Palestinian people by reopening aid to President Mahmoud Abbas' new government in the West Bank while denying the same to the Hamas.

Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was addressing a human rights conference in Ireland, also said the Bush administration's refusal to accept Hamas' 2006 election victory was "criminal."

Carter said Hamas, besides winning a fair and democratic mandate that should have entitled it to lead the Palestinian government, had proven itself to be far more organized in its political and military showdowns with Abbas' moderate Fatah movement.

Carter said the consensus of the U.S., Israel and the EU to start funneling aid to Abbas' new government in the West Bank but continue blocking Hamas in the Gaza Strip represented an "effort to divide Palestinians into two peoples."

"All efforts of the international community should be to reconcile the two, but there's no effort from the outside to bring the two together," he said.

The U.S. and European countries cut off the Hamas-led government last year because of the Islamic militant group's refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel. They have continued to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the United Nations and other organizations.

In the latest crisis, the U.S., Israel and much of the West have been trying to shore up Abbas in hopes that the West Bank can be made into a democratic example that would bring along Gaza.

NEW ORLEANS - Supporters of a Democratic congressman charged with bribery and money laundering harkened to their civil rights days on Wednesday as they denounced the allegations against U.S. Rep. William Jefferson.

The group, including ministers and the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, alleged the 16-count corruption indictment was the work of a Republican White House and Justice Department scheming to target black Democratic leaders and shift attention from legal troubles of Republican congressmen.

The news conference attended by about 50 people was a sign Jefferson hasn't lost friends in New Orleans, which re-elected him to a ninth term from Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District in December 2006 despite an FBI probe of his African business dealings.

Prosecutors say Jefferson used his influence as co-chairman of the congressional Africa Investment and Trade Caucus to broker deals in numerous African nations, and that he demanded kickbacks for himself and for family members. He is also charged with bribing a Nigerian official.

He allegedly received more than $500,000 in bribes and demanded millions more between 2000 and 2005. He has pleaded not guilty.

The group said they would raise money for his legal defense and offer public relations help through the Justice for Jefferson Committee.

Tracie Washington, a civil rights lawyer, asked the audience to give Jefferson the benefit of the doubt.

Danatus King, president of the local chapter of the NAACP, said, "it's important that all of us keep our eyes on the prize and that prize is one word, and that one word is justice."

Asked to comment on allegations aired at the news conference, Bryan Sierra, a Justice Department spokesman, said "I'm not even going to dignify that with a response." White House spokesman Blair Jones also declined to comment.

Not everyone in attendance at Wednesday's news conference expressed undivided loyalty to Jefferson.

Sitawi Jahi, a 54-year-old youth development program director, said he came "to gather facts." But he said his confidence in Jefferson was strained by some of the evidence, in particular an allegation the FBI found $90,000 in bribe money in the congressman's freezer.

"That's hard to explain," he said.

Jefferson's legal defense fund, set up about 18 months ago, has about $140,000, according to Walter Wilkerson, the lawyer handling the fund.

PARIS - NATO intercepted Iranian weapons shipments to Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents, providing evidence Iran is violating international law to aid a group it once considered a bitter enemy, a senior U.S. diplomat said Wednesday
"There's irrefutable evidence the Iranians are now doing this," Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said on CNN. "It's certainly coming from the government of Iran. It's coming from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard corps command, which is a basic unit of the Iranian government."
Speaking separately to The Associated Press, Burns said NATO must act to stop the shipments. The Iran-Afghanistan frontier is "a very long border. But the Iranians need to know that we are there and that we're going to oppose this."
"It's a very serious question," he said, adding that Iran is in "outright violation" of UN Security council resolutions.

PARIS - A senior U.S. diplomat accused Iran on Tuesday of transferring weapons to Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan the most direct comments yet on the issue by a ranking American official.
Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns, speaking to reporters in Paris, said Iran was funding insurrections across the Middle East — and "Iran is now even transferring arms to the Taliban in Afghanistan."
"It's a country that's trying to flex its muscles, but in a way that's injurious to the interests of just about everybody else in the world," he said. "I think it's a major miscalculation."
In Afghanistan last week, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Iranian weapons were falling into the hands of Taliban fighters, but stopped short of blaming the government itself.
Iran's possible role in aiding insurgents in Iran has long been hotly debated, and last month some Western and Persian Gulf governments charged that the Islamic government in Tehran is also secretly bolstering Taliban fighters.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, U.S. Army Gen. Dan McNeill said Taliban fighters are showing signs of better training, using combat techniques comparable to "an advanced Western military" in ambushes of U.S. Special Forces soldiers.
"In Afghanistan it is clear that the Taliban is receiving support, including arms from ... elements of the Iranian regime," British Prime Minister Tony Blair wrote in the May 31 edition of the Economist.
Iran, which is also in a dispute with the West over its nuclear program, denies the Taliban accusation, calling it part of a broad anti-Iranian campaign. Tehran says it makes no sense that a Shiite-led government like itself would help the fundamentalist Sunni movement of the Taliban.
Burns also criticized Iran's perceived intransigence over its nuclear program, which many Western powers fear masks a plan to build weapons — though Iran says its intentions are to generate energy.
Burns insisted new UN Security Council measures were needed "so that the Iranians don't have business as usual."
"We will have to move forward at the Security Council for a third ... resolution in a matter of weeks," he said.
The council imposed sanctions on Iran on Dec. 23 for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment despite U.N. demands, and modestly increased the sanctions March 24 when Tehran stepped up its enrichment program.
"We believe that beyond (the third resolution), Europe and the Asian countries and Middle Eastern countries will have to adopt even harsher sanction measures outside the Security Council," Burns added.
Many have sought new sanctions after the IAEA's recent report that Iran's enrichment program was expanding — and its warning for the first time that its knowledge of Tehran's nuclear activities was shrinking.

WASHINGTON -President Bush, defend his war strategy, declassified intelligence Tuesday asserting that Osama bin Laden ordered a top lieutenant in early 2005 to form a terrorist cell that would conduct attacks outside Iraq — and that the United States should be the top target.
Homeland Security Department in March 2005, reporting that bin Laden had enlisted Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, his senior operative in Iraq, to plan potential strikes in the U.S. The warning was described at the time as credible but not specific and did not prompt the administration to raise its national terror alert level.

The declassification of the intelligence came a day before Bush was scheduled to speak about terrorism at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Bush, who is battling Democrats in Congress over spending for the war in Iraq, will argue that the terrorist threat to America is real, said Frances Fragos Townsend, the White House homeland security adviser. She said Bush would talk about why Iraq is an important battleground in fighting terrorism abroad to prevent attacks on U.S. soil and highlight previously reported successes in foiling terrorist attacks.
Democrats and other critics have accused Bush of selectively declassifying intelligence, including portions of a sensitive National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, to justify the U.S.-led invasion on the ground that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed weapons of mass destruction. That assertion proved to be bad intelligence.

Townsend said the declassified intelligence showed that in January 2005, bin Laden tasked al-Zarqawi with organizing the cell. Al-Zarqawi, the former leader of al-Qaida's Iraq operations, was killed there in June 2006 by a U.S. airstrike.

"We know from the intelligence community that al-Zarqawi welcomed the tasking and claimed he already had some good proposals," Townsend said.

She said that in the spring of 2005, bin Laden instructed Hamza Rabia, a senior operative, to brief al-Zarqawi on al-Qaida planning to attack sites outside Iraq, including the United States.
Around the same time, Abu Fajah al-Libi, a senior al-Qaida manager, suggested that bin Laden send Rabia to Iraq to actually help al-Zarqawi plan the external operations, Townsend said.
Townsend said the information was declassified because the intelligence community has tracked all leads from the information.

Pelosi toured Jerusalem holy sites Saturday alongside a congressional delegation that included Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.
The tour was part of the congressional delegation's first full day in Jerusalem, the first stop on their fact-finding trip to the Middle East. The group arrived here Friday.

At a closed military hearing last Saturday at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval prison in Cuba, Mohammed claimed responsibility for plotting more than 30 attacks and personally beheading American journalist Daniel Pearl.
He also gave military officials a written statement alleging mistreatment before arriving at Guantanamo Bay. He had previously been held by the CIA at secret facilities.
Levin and Graham acknowledged Friday that they watched the proceedings on a closed circuit television in an adjoining room. The public and press were barred from the session, and the senators' attendance had not been announced.
A transcript of Mohammed's hearing, released Wednesday by the Pentagon, refers to a claim he made that he was tortured by the CIA, though he said he was not under duress at Guantanamo when he confessed to his role in the attacks. The CIA has said its interrogation practices are legal, and it does not use torture.
"Allegations of prisoner mistreatment must be taken seriously and properly investigated," the senators' statement said.
According to the senators, the military officials hearing Mohammed's testimony said the allegations would be submitted to the appropriate authorities.
The two senators have battled the Bush administration in recent years on the treatment of the nation's most dangerous terrorism suspects. A Democratic plan to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq' passed its first test on Thursday as the House Appropriations Committee voted to endorse the proposal, overcoming Republican opposition.

Members voted 37-27 along party lines to uphold a provision in a $124 billion war spending legislation that calls for troops to leave Iraq before September 2008, and possibly sooner if the Iraqi government does not meet certain benchmarks. Republicans had proposed stripping out the timetable.
(And it’s going to get vetoed and you don’t have the votes to over turn the veto, *sigh* What a waste-LNN )
The Democratic-RUN committee (CLASSIC, that sounds about right, RUN-LNN) then approved the overall spending measure by 36-28. Rep. Barbara Lee D-Calif., a strong foe of the war, was the only lawmaker to switch sides in the vote.
The votes gave Democrats a victory, if only for the moment, in their effort to challenge President Bush's war policies and pressure him into starting a withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Despite the measure's approval, its longer-range fate is dim.

In the Senate, minority Republicans can use procedural moves to block the troop withdrawal language and the White House has threatened to veto the bill if it contains the provision forcing the removal of troops.

Democrats said the timetable was necessary to force the Iraqis to step up, and by another 37-27 partyline vote pushed through a provision promising to "fully support the needs" of service members in combat.
Young proposed a separate amendment that would have restricted funding to steps needed to carry out a troop withdrawal. He said he would vote against it but was an issue that should be settled.
Sensing an effort to lure them into a vote that could be used against in re-election campaigns, Democrats opposed Young's proposal as well and it failed 64-0.
Republicans accused Democrats of micromanaging the war, taking over a role best left to the generals. Rep. Hal Rogers of Kentucky accused Democrats of an "ill-advised and precipitous withdrawal" plan. And Rep. Roger Wicker of Mississippi said the legislation was a backdoor method of cutting off funds for the troops — a charge that Obey disputed.
The political landscape was different across the Capitol, where Republicans expressed confidence they had the votes to defeat an alternative approach advanced by Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats.
Their proposal sets a goal of a troop withdrawal by March 31, 2008. A mid-afternoon vote was expected.

Hillary Rodham Clinton' a Democratic presidential candidate, said in a New York Times interview (In other words ‘The liberal daily news’-LNN) that if elected she would maintain a scaled-down American military force in Iraq that would stay off the streets in Baghdad and no longer would try to protect Iraqis from sectarian violence.

She cited "remaining vital national security interests" for a continued deployment of U.S. troops in Iraq aimed at fighting al-Qaida, deterring Iran' protecting Kurds and possibly supporting the Iraqi military, the newspaper reported Wednesday night on its Web site.

AFL-CIO may ask Dems to move convention

DENVER - Stung by Gov. Bill Ritter's (D-Governor) veto of a bill that would make it easier for unions to organize, the AFL-CIO threatened to recommend the Democratic Party move its 2008 convention from Denver.
In an unsigned letter Thursday, the AFL-CIO's executive council said it planned to seek reintroduction of a bill that would make it easier to set up all-union workplaces and seek a commitment from Ritter that he would sign it.
"Union members and working people will make up more than a quarter of the delegates to the Denver convention," a statement from the union said. "Unless we can be assured that the governor will support our values and priorities, we will strongly urge the Democratic Party to relocate the convention."
Keith Maddox, a national AFL-CIO official, said a high-level delegation that could include the union's president, John Sweeney, will be sent to speak with Ritter. He did not provide a timetable.
Governor spokesman Evan Dreyer said the governor welcomes the dialogue and is confident that the delegation won't focus on a dispute over the vetoed bill.
"He feels badly that labor feels badly about what happened," Dreyer said.
In his first veto in office, Ritter said he was satisfied with the bill but not with the process that led to its passage, arguing the debate should have been broader. Business leaders had complained they were excluded from the discussions.
Observers said it would be difficult for the union to get the convention moved, but the threat is "very potent."
"If they make the threat very publicly, they are going to have to live up to it," said Gary Chaison, professor of labor relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
Denver's bid for the 2008 Democratic National Convention, nearly collapsed because the leader of the stagehands union balked at signing a pledge not to strike if the convention were held at the nonunion Pepsi Center. A compromise was negotiated to staff the Pepsi Center entirely with union labor for the duration of the convention.

House Democrats to unveil Iraq war plan

WASHINGTON - In a direct challenge to President Bush' House Democrats are advancing legislation requiring the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the fall of next year.
Democratic officials who described the measure said the timetable would be accelerated — to the end of 2007 — if the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki does not meet goals for providing Iraq's security.
The conditions, described as tentative until presented to the Democratic rank and file Thursday, would be added to legislation providing nearly $100 billion the Bush administration has requested for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The officials who described the measure did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to speak until after it was presented to the Democratic caucus. They also stressed the provisions were tentative until then.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi office announced plans for a Thursday news conference to unveil the measure, providing no details. The announcement said she would be joined by Rep. John Murtha- D-Pa., and other key lawmakers. Murtha is chairman of the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the Pentagon' budget and is among the House's most outspoken opponents of the war.
Meanwhile, Gen. David Petraeus said insurgents in Iraq have sought to intensify attacks during a Baghdad security crackdown, which he predicted should not be at full strength until June.
Pelosi and the leadership have struggled in recent days to come up with an approach on the war that would satisfy liberals reluctant to vote for continued funding without driving away more moderate Democrats unwilling to be seen as tying the hands of military commanders.

The decision to impose conditions on the war risks a major confrontation with the Bush administration and its Republican allies in Congress.
But without a unified party, the Democratic leadership faced the possibility of a highly embarrassing defeat when the spending legislation reaches a vote, likely later this month.

The legislation also calls for the Pentagon to adhere to its existing standards for equipping and training U.S. troops sent overseas and for providing time at home between tours of combat.
Yet it also permits Bush to issue waivers of these standards. Democrats described the waiver provision as an attempt to embarrass the president into adhering to the standards. But they concede the overall effect will be to permit the administration to proceed with plans to deploy five additional combat brigades to the Baghdad area over the next few months.

Several moderate Democrats spoke out against it, though. And Republicans sharply attacked it as the abandonment of troops already in the war zone.

Howard Dean Demands GOP Candidates Denounce Ann Coulter for Referring to John Edwards as a 'Faggot'
Democratic Party boss Howard Dean demanded that Republican presidential candidates denounce conservative columnist Ann Coulter after she referred to Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards as a ‘faggot’ during a speech Friday at a national conservative gathering.
"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I - so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards."
After her comments, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued a press release expressing his outrage. Dean called Coulter’s remarks ‘hate-filled and bigoted.’
"Republicans—including the Republican presidential candidates who shared the podium with Ann Coulter today—should denounce her hateful remarks."

Now I don’t condone the use of this word nor any hateful words towards other, but Howard Dean needs to step up to the plate and retract some of HIS demeaning comments also.-LNN

Since then, Democrats have been trying to decide what to do next. Some worried that a plan by Rep. John Murtha to restrict funding for the war would go too far. Murtha, D-Pa., is extending his support to the revised proposal.

The tactic is more likely to embarrass Bush politically than force his hand on the war. He would have to sign repeated waivers for units and report to Congress those units with equipment shortfalls and other problems

Rep. Adam Putnam R-Fla., called the plan a "fig leaf" to distract the public from what he said was Democrats' ultimate goal of cutting off funds for troops in combat.
"We support full funding for our troops who are in harms way — without strings attached," said Putnam, R-Fla.

The decision to engage Iran and Syria on the war in Iraq is a major departure for U.S. policy. The bipartisan Iraq Study Group in December recommended U.S. dialogue with Iran and Syria, but until now the administration has resisted that course

Bottom line, the Dems are trying to make agendas based on so called polls, polls conducted by the mainstream media whos objective is to loose this war. If everyone would just dig a little deeper to actually find this polls, you'd see more to them then what the Media says it is.
They will conduct polls and then report the results, but only report the results that best suits their agenda.
Take the time to look for the actual results of any poll and ALL the questions the poll asks, there is more then meets the eye then what is being reported.-LNN

I will begin by saying, YES, I am a republican. My heritage runs deep in politics. As far back as John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Samuel Adams, and yes, even George H. Bush & George W. Bush. And DAMN proud of it!

This blog is dedicated to true patriots of the United States of America and to show that the change in the US Congress in 2006 will be a HUGE mistake for the US. This mistake could very well destroy what my ancestry work so hard to achieve.
And I will post on the (liberal bias) news Org.s and just how the 'LN's' will change our country for the worse if we don't stop them in their tracks.
