WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama began overhauling U.S. treatment of terror suspects Thursday, signing orders to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, shut down secret overseas CIA prisons, review military war crimes trials and ban the harshest interrogation methods.
With his action, Obama started changing how the United States prosecutes and questions al-Qaida, Taliban or other foreign fighters who pose a threat to Americans — and overhauling America's image abroad, battered by accusations of the use of torture and the indefinite detention of suspects at the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.
"The message that we are sending the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly and we are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals," the president said.
The centerpiece order would close the much-maligned Guantanamo facility within a year, a complicated process with many unanswered questions that was nonetheless a key campaign promise of Obama's. The administration already has suspended trials for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo for 120 days pending a review of the military tribunals.
OK, what is wrong here?
Is it because Obama wants to make his image of what this country should be more appealing to the rest of the world? Well the rest of the world wasn’t viscously attacked on 9/11, America was.
Is it about torture? Then why close down Gitmo and the CIA prisons? Just sign an executive order that these places go by the Military Book of extracting information.
Why suspend trials? Isn’t this what the left had wanted, to not hold them indefinitely, but to proceed with their trials?
A Pentagon report released a few weeks ago has clearly stated that 61% of the captured Al Qaeda detainees that have been released from Gitmo have returned to terrorist activity.
Did Obama not get this report? Or is he ignoring it?
Obama is jumping right in to the waters before testing whether it’s hot or fridged cold. It’s a knee jerk reaction from pressure of the American liberal nutcases. Without review. Without vetting. Without a PLAN on what to do with these terrorist.
People, we have a serious problem with a rookie senator / President who is clearly green behind the ears.
Will Joe Biden be right about his prediction of an attack during Obamas first (and hopefully only) 4 years?

And about the dangers of detainees mingling with stateside prisoners "You've got the risk of recruitment where they're selling their brand of Jihad,"
Maybe the Old coot Murtha can get a reservation inside, once the "job creating" prison construction is complete.
